Every day six families around Australia will be told their child has a life threatening medical condition.That’s 2,000 children and teenages each year who need the healing power of a wish to give them hope for the future. Make-A-Wish recognises that a wish is so much more than a dream, for a child battling illness, it’s their hope and strength. Since being founded in 1985, Make-A-Wish Australia has granted over 8,500 wishes and we’re proud to play a small part in these amazing experiences. While there are so many to choose from, we thought we’d share a few of our favourite wish stories.
7 year-old Jessica was diagnosed at 18-months old with muscular dystrophy, a disease that affects her arms, legs and muscles. That certainly hasn’t stopped her from dancing though! Her dreams of becoming a ballerina were granted on her 7th birthday when she was taken to the Australian Ballet Centre! Swapping out her usual wheelchair for a trike, Jessica donned a tiara, tutu and ballet slippers and learnt the pirouettes from Princess Aurora!
4 year-old Dwayne has daily seizures and takes 16 pills a day, which reduce, but don’t control his epilepsy and he wanted nothing more than to fly far far away from the hospital...to the moon! A wish one year in the making, Dwayne was escorted to his QANTAS rocket flight by a horde of Stormtroopers with cheering fans awaiting his arrival. A nearby hangar provided the perfect lunarscape, where he joined some aliens and his favourite superheroes to hunt for moon rocks and plant his hand-drawn flag!
Born with cystic fibrosis, 6 year-old Abigail began to question why she was the only one at school taking medication, doing physio and going to appointments. Luckily Make-A-Wish had the perfect mission for the wannabe superhero! After completing her superhero training, with the occasional delivery from Supergirl, Abigail was given her mission: find the queen unicorn’s lost sparkle and return it to Unicornland. Abigail had a magical time in Unicornland; she played with fairies and even got to ride a rainbow unicorn called Sugar!
